JalanJalan：さっき音楽のキャリアはトロンボーンからだったって言ってたけど、他のは？ドラムとかパーカッションとか。（Zainalはよくステージでパーカッションを演奏したりする。）
JalanJalan : You said you started your music carrier with trombone. How about others, like drums and percussions? (Zainal often play percussions on stage.)

Zainal：トロンボーンを始める前、家族とやってたときにドラムを叩いてたんだ。だからドラムのスキルがあるんだよ。Head Windではトロンボーンを吹いていて、パーカッションやドラムはやらなかったけど、毎日練習して腕が落ちないようにしてた。で、10年後にバンドを離れてソロアルバムを作った時に、また始めたんだ。トロンボーンはやめてパーカッションをするようになった。一番好きな楽器だからね。
Zainal : When I started with family, before I stared trombone, I was playing drums. So that's why I have drum skills with me. With Head Wind band, I was playing trombone. I didn't play percussion and drums. But I practiced every day to make sure that I still have that with me. Then when I left the band after10 years with the band, I did my solo album, then I begin to play back. I left my trombone, but I picked up my percussion again because that was main instrument that I like.

JalanJalan：ボーカルの才能があることは前から知ってたの？
JalanJalan : Did you know you also have vocal talent?

Zainal：僕の歌に拍手をしてくれる人がいるのを見るまで気づかなかった。実際スタンディング・オベーションをしてくれる人もかなりいたんだよ。それでこう思ったんだ。「僕は一体ミュージシャンなんだろうか、それとも歌手なんだろうか」自分自身に訊いてみた。そしてこう決めたんだ。僕は全てだって。やりたいことはなんだってできる。まだ健康だし、エネルギーだってあるし。歌を歌うことだって、ギターを弾くことだってできる。もしそうしたければね。それは自分次第なんだ。どれだけ一生懸命やるかなんだ。もし次回のコンサートで僕がギターを弾いてるところを見たいっていうんだったら、そうだな、たぶん1週間くらい練習すればなんとかなるよ。1曲だけだけどね。僕にはそれができるんだ。音楽を習うのはすごく早いんだ。音楽を吸収するのはほんとに早い。僕に与えられた特別のギフトだね。ほんとにほんとに早いんだよ。歌詞も一日で覚えちゃうし。特別な才能なんだ。それとも仕事だからかな（笑）。プロだからね。
Zainal : I didn't realize it until I have people who clapped when I sang. I did have a big standing ovation. So I said, "Am I a musician or am I a singer?". I questioned myself. And I decided to say that I'm everything. I can do whatever I want to do. Because if I'm still healthy, I still have energy. I can sing. I can play guitar if I want to. It's up to a person. It's how hard you work. If you want to see me playing guitar at the next concert, it just take me, maybe one week to practice for just one song. I can do that. I learn music very fast. I absorb music very fast. That's special gift brought to me. Very very fast. I can remember lyrics in one day. So that is special gift. Or maybe it's my job. (laugh) As a professional.

JalanJalan：ボーカルを維持するために何かしてる？
JalanJalan : Do you do any exercise to maintain your vocal?

Zainal：特にはしてない。でも睡眠はとても重要なんだ。例えばあと2日でスタジオ入りするとしよう。スタジオの前、もしくはコンサートとか他のパフォーマンスでもいいけど－の2日前には必ず8時間睡眠をとらなくちゃいけない。きっちり確実に8時間。そうでなければ喉がすぐ疲れてしまって、中に砂が入ってるような感じがする。だから睡眠はほとにほんとに重要なんだ。もし睡眠が十分じゃなかったら、ステージで自信がなくなっちゃう。自分が100%じゃないって知ってるからね。すっごい怖い時があるよ。
Zainal : Not really. But my sleep is very important. Lets' say I have to go to studio in 2 days time, these 2 days before the studio, or before the concert or before any performance, I must have at least 8 hours sleep. A solid 8 hours sleep. If not, I will feel my throat gets tired very fast and I feel like there's sand. So sleep is very very important. If not enough sleep, I lose a lot of confidence on stage. Because you know you are not 100% well. Very scary sometimes. Very scary.

Zainal：でも経験が助けてくれることもある。新人歌手だったら、疲れてたり、他の理由で、曲の高いところで声が出なかったらどうしていいかわからない。だからとにかく無理矢理高い声を出そうとする。でも経験を積んだ歌手だったら、観客に責任をすり返るんだ。（笑）自分が高い声が出ないことは知ってるから、観客に歌ってもらうように仕向けるんだ。みんな歌えるのが嬉しくて「わぉ、これはいいね」って言うかもしれなけど、実は歌手は歌えないだけ。そこまで高い音が出ないだけだったりして。種明かししてみるとね。
Zainal : But experience helps. If you are a new singer, you don't know what to do when you cannot reach the high part of the song, maybe because you are tired or other reason. And you just force yourself to try to get high note. But when you are experienced, you will just change the responsibility to the audience.(laugh) You know you couldn't reach it, so you make the audience sing. People will be excited to sing and say "Wow, it's good," but actually he can't sing. He can't reach that note. So that's how you play tricks in it.

Zainal：どの分野ででも経験はとてもとても大切だ。特にステージの上に立つエンターテイナーとして人を笑わせなきゃいけない。人を泣かせるのは簡単だけど、笑わせるのはそんなに簡単なことなんじゃないんだ。歌を上手に歌うのと同時に、みんなが飽きないように、話しかけなきゃいけない。楽しませなきゃいけないんだ。特にアジアでは。世界の他の国では、ただステージの上に立って歌を歌っているだけで、評価してもらえるかもしれない。でもここでは笑わせないといけないんだ。観客は笑わないと満足しない。そうして初めて評価してくれる。歌がそんなにうまくなくても大した問題じゃない。彼らを笑わせられたらね。（笑）でもラッキーなことに僕は両方備えてると思ってる。マレーシアのアーティストのうち何人かは歌はとても上手に歌うけど、観客とのコミュニケーションがあまり上手くなかったりする。でも僕は両方同時にできるからラッキーだと思う。それとも年を取っただけかな。
Zainal : Experience is very very important in all areas. Especially to be an entertainer on stage, you have to make people laugh. To make people cry is easy, but to make people laugh is not that easy. You have to sing well, and at the same time, you try not to make people get bored, and you have to talk to them. You have to entertain them. Especially in Asia. In other parts of the world, you can just stand there and sing, and they know how to appreciate. But here you must make them laugh. They have to laugh. And they appreciate you. Even if singing is not good, it doesn't matter as long as you make them laugh. (laugh) But I'm lucky because I believe I have both. Some of the artists in Malaysia, they sing very well but communication with the audience is not that strong. So I'm quite lucky because I have both at the same time. Maybe I'm old. Just old.

JalanJalan：1959年生まれだっけ？
JalanJalan : 1959?

Zainal：そう、1959年。43歳。でも僕は年を取ったことを受け入れるのを拒否してるんだ。10年前の僕を知ってるだろ。（実はJalanJalanは10年前にもZainalに会ったことがあるのです）僕は今でも若い人みたいな服を着たい。今でも髪は長いままにしていたい。銀（のアクセサリー）をつけたい、若い人みたいにね。でもエネルギーってことから考えると、年を取ったと感じるね。昔、まだ僕が22、23歳だった頃はステージの上で4時間ぶっ通しで歌えた。踊って歌って、走って、走って、登って、登って・・・でも今じゃ3曲歌うと息がきれちゃう。100プラスを探してね。そう事実なんだ。ほんとに事実なんだ。昔は走れたけど、今はもう走れない。若く見えるようにすることはできても、若い人のように行動することはできないね。（笑）
Zainal : Yeah, 1959. 43 now. But I refuse to accept old. You know me 10 years ago. (Actually JapanJalan met Zainal 10 years ago.) I still want to dress like a young man. I still want to have long hair. I want to wear silver, like young people. But in terms of energy, I can feel it. Before when I was 22, 23, I can sing on stage 4 hours non-stop. Dance and sing and run and run, climb and climb... but now after 3 songs, I would be short of breath. I would look for 100 plus. Yeah, it's true. It's true. Before, I can run. But now, I cannot run. I can just look young but I cannot behave young. (laugh)

 　
　 　

アフリカ音楽・インド音楽
African & Indian music

JalanJalan：Zainalの音楽は伝統的な音楽じゃなくて、他の物の影響もあるように思うんだけど・・・？
JalanJalan : I think your music is affected not only by traditional music but also from some...?

Zainal：アフリカ音楽の影響もあるね。僕はあんまりポップスは聞かないんだ。聞いてると自分の音楽もポップスっぽくなっちゃいからね。もっとクリエイティブなアイデアを得るために、インドの伝統音楽とか、アフリカの部族音楽とか、マレーの伝統音楽とか、演歌とか、そういうのを聞く。インスピレーションをくれるからね。本当にインスピレーションを与えてくれる。例えば誰かが"Yesterday"をくれたとするよね。僕はこれを聞いたことがある。でももし今まで聞いたことがないものをくれたとしたら、そこから受ける影響は、商業化されたものから受けるものよりもずっといいと思うんだ。だから僕はいつでも新しいことをすることができるんだ。
Zainal : Some African, African music. I don't listen to pop music that much. Because I don't want get influenced from them. My music will become more like pops if I listen to them. So to get more creative ideas, I listen to classical Indian, tribal music of Africa, traditional Malay, Enka music, things like that. They give me inspiration. It will really give me inspiration. If you give me "Yesterday", I heard this before. But if you give me something that I have never heard before, the influence is much better than commercialized one. That's why I always come out with something new.

JalanJalan：いつからアフリカ音楽やインド音楽を聴くようになったの？
JalanJalan : When did you start to listen to African music, Indian music?

Zainal：学校を出てすぐ。彼らが言うところの「宗教音楽」に関わるようになったんだ。奥にとってはただの音楽だけど。インド寺院に行って、そこに座って彼らが演奏するのを聞いてた。どうやって時間（リズム）を刻むのか知りたくて。実際音楽では、数学がとても重要なんだよ。いろんな計算をしなくちゃいけないんだ。特にパーカッションを習う時にはね。一つのバーに4つの拍子があって、その４拍を16拍に分ける、16を32に・・・数学がいろいろ関わってくるんだ。優れたミュージシャンは医者や弁護士のようなプロフェッショナルと同じくらいの価値があると思う。彼らを見下すべきじゃない。この国では、ミュージシャンはドラッグ中毒や女たらしや酒飲みだと思われることが多いけど、それは間違ってる。プロフェッショナルなミュージシャンはレベルの高い人なんだ。彼らはチープじゃないんだよ。
Zainal : Right after school. I was involved in a lot of what they called it "religious music". But to me it's just music. I went to Indian temples, and I sat there and listen to what they played, to know how they divide time. Actually in music, you must have good mathematics. A lot of calculations involved in music. Especially when you learn how to play percussions. Because in one bar, you have 4 Beats, 4 beats then you have to divide to 16. 16 divide to 32.... There's a lot of mathematics involved. So good musicians are equivalent to professionals like doctors, and lawyers.... You should not look down on those people. In this country, people tend to think musicians are like drug addicts, womanizer, drunker.... That's wrong. Professional musicians are very high-level people. They are not cheap.

JalanJalan：アフリカ音楽は？マレーシアではポピュラーなの？
JalanJalan : How about African music? Is it common in Malaysia?

Zainal：そんなにポピュラーじゃないね。だから僕は長い間（自分の地位を）維持していられるんだ。ライバルがいないからね。アフリカ音楽を聴く人は少ないし、それをここに持ち込んだり、それで新しいものを作り出す人がいないから。それに僕のメロディは彼らのリズムにぴったりだったんだ。
Zainal : Not that common. That's why I managed to sustain for long time. I don't have competitors. Not many people will listen to African music, and bring it to here, and create something else. And my melody just match to the rhythm.

JalanJalan：でもどうやってアフリカ音楽の情報を手に入れるの？
JalanJalan : But how do you get information about African music?

Zainal：アフリカのミュージシャンと一緒に演奏するんだ。僕はいろいろな音楽祭に参加してるし、僕たちはそこで知り合うんだ。それから連絡を取り合って、彼らがここに３週間、４週間と滞在したりして。僕のやり方っていうのは、彼らに休暇をプレゼントするんだ。ホテルに知り合いが多いからね。僕はこう言うんだ。「OK。何日休暇が欲しいの？３日？その代わり僕と演奏しなくちゃ駄目だよ」ミュージシャンっていうのはいつでも演奏したいと思ってる。だから彼らはここに来て、チェラティンのクラブ・メッドやティオマンで3日か4日楽しい休暇を過ごして、残りの時間は僕と一緒に演奏して過ごすんだ。お互いに学び合うってわけさ。
Zainal : I play with African musicians. I played in many festivals and we get to know each other through festivals. And then making contact, and they come here 3 weeks, 4 weeks. What I do is I buy them a holidays because I have a good connection with all the hotels. I say, "OK, you tell me how long yow wanna for holidays, for 3 days? But in return, you have to play with me". Musicians always want to play. So they come here, they have good holidaysin Club Med Cheratin, or Tioman, for 3,4 days, and rest of the days they will be with you and play. We learn, we exchange.

Zainal：でもここの人からネガティブなコメントを聞くことも多いんだよ。「なんでそんなに外国人を使うの？」「なんでアルバムを作るのに外国人に演奏してもらわないといけないの？」ってね。僕はそうやって習うんべきって言うんだ。外国人を呼んで一緒に演奏すれば、音楽の知識を交換して、音楽のことをもっと理解できるだけでなく、もしその人がその国で有名だったら、同じように有名になれるかも知れない。その国に連れて行ってもらっていっしょに演奏できるかも知れないんだからね。ネガティブに考えない方がいいよね。例えばジーンズを買うとする。リーバイスのジーンズを。で友達に「これどう思う？」って訊くと、友達は言う。「うーん、君がこれを着たら他の人はなんて言うかな？」どうしてそうなんだろう。どうしてそんなにネガティブなんだろう。そうじゃなくてこう言えばいいのに。「いいと思うけど、もう少し短くしたら？」この方がずっといいと思わない？もしくは車のタイヤを他のタイヤに変えたいという。すると彼らはすぐさまこう言う。「やめときなよ。事故が起きるから。死んじゃうかも知れないよ。」彼らはポジテ�! Bブに考えないんだ。こう言うべきなのに。「どんなタイヤを使いたいの？」「リムのサイズは？」「フレキシビリティは？」ポジティブでしょ。いつもネガティブなんだ。いつでも引き戻そうとする。それが難しいところなんだ。そういう文化なんだ。文化が絡んでくると動きを取るのが難しいことがある。誰かがトップにいる時、アメリカでは普通コンサートに行ったり、サポートしてもっと上に上がれるようにしようとしてくれる。でもアジアではなんとか下に引き摺り降ろそうとするんだ。その人に立ち向かって上にあがろうとするんじゃなくてね。だから難しい。この文化は治さなくちゃいけない。そしてそれは学校から始めないと。もう僕は43歳で、すっかりその文化に毒されちゃってるよ。（笑）
Zainal : But sometimes, I do have a lot of very negative comments from the local people. "Why are you using a lot of foreigners?" "Why do you need foreigners to play for your album?" I told them this is how we should learn. If you call foreigners to play with you, not only you exchange knowledge in music, understand music better, but if that person is popular in that country, you might be popular as well, because he will bring you along to play together. You should not be so negative. For example, when you buy jeans, a pair of Levis jeans, you will ask your friend, "What do you think about this? " and your friend say "Gee, what will other people think if you wear this one?" Why they have to be in that way. Why they are so negative? They should say like " I think it's nice but you cut this a little bit." It's better. Right? Or when you say you want to change the tire for your car, to put a different tire. Immediately they will say, "Don't. It will cause accident. You would die." They don't think positively. They should say like "What tire you wanna use?" "What size of the rim?" "What is flexibility?" Positive. It's always negative. It's always pulling you back. That is the difficulties. That's culture. When culture is involved, it's very difficult for us to move sometimes. When you are on the top, normally in America what they are trying to do is to push yourself much higher from where you are, by supporting you, going to your concert. But in Asia sometimes, they are busy how to bring you down, rather than they challenge you to go up. So that's difficult. That culture has to be improved. But this must start from school. Not now. I'm 43. Destroyed with that culture already. (laugh)

JalanJalan："Gamal"を出した時は、サラワクの人みたいな格好してたよね？
JalanJalan: When you released "Gamal", you were wearing like Sarawakian?

Zainal：そうそう。あの時も大変だったんだ。最初「イスラム教徒のくせに刺青なんかして・」って言われたんだ。ほんとはペンで描いただけで、後から洗い落とせたんだけどね。ほんとの刺青じゃなかったんだ。刺青は色が肌につくから、イスラムは刺青は認めていない。刺青は僕らの宗教に反するものだけど、でもほんとにただペンで描いただけだったんだ。僕が"Gamal"のアルバムでやろうとしてたのは、人々に、そして全世界にこういうことを伝えたかったんだ。「ねぇ、僕らだって、僕ら独自のヘアスタイルを持ってる。独自のデザインも、独自のマテリアルも、そして独自の音楽だって。」僕はそれを言おうとしてただけだったんだ。でも理解してくれない人もいて。僕は頭がおかしいとか、イスラムからはみ出そうとしてるとか言われた。難しいよね。なかなか人にちゃんと評価してもらえなくて。時々すごく傷つくよ。ほんとに。
Zainal : Yeah, and also I had problem with that. First they said, "Gee, you put tattoo, although you are a Muslim man." But my tattoo was written by a marker pen. I could wash after that. That's not really tattoo. Islam is against the real tattoo, because the colours stick on your skin. That's against our religion but that was just a marker pen. What I was trying to do through that "Gamal" album is to tell the people, the whole world, "Hey, we have our own hair style, we also have our own design, we have our own material. We have our own music." That's what I was trying say. They didn't understand. They thought I was crazy. They though I was going out from Islam. So that's difficult. They didn't know how to appreciate. Sometimes, very hurt. Sometimes very hurt.
